If you’re a Georgia Southern University student who has found themselves in this situation, this guide is here to help you navigate through the process and make informed decisions, including why it’s helpful to have a Statesboro DUI attorney.
Stay Calm and Seek Support
Getting charged with a DUI can be a shocking and stressful experience. It’s crucial to stay calm and reach out for support. Inform a trusted friend or family member about the situation, so you don’t have to go through it alone. Georgia Southern University provides counseling services for students that can help you cope with any stress, anxiety, or guilt you may be feeling.
Understand the Legal Implications
Educate yourself about the legal implications of a DUI charge in Georgia. A DUI is a serious offense that can lead to fines, license suspension, probation, and even jail time. Familiarize yourself with Georgia’s DUI laws to understand the potential consequences you might face.
Consult with a Statesboro DUI Attorney

Attend Court Proceedings
If you’re charged with a DUI, you’ll likely have to attend court proceedings. Make sure to appear on the designated date and time to avoid additional legal complications. This is when having an attorney is both beneficial and a relief. She will guide you through what to expect during the court proceedings and help you present your case effectively.
Consider Legal Options with Your DUI Attorney
Your Statesboro DUI attorney will assess the details of your case and explore potential legal options. She might negotiate for reduced charges, probation, or alternative sentencing programs, depending on the circumstances. It’s important to follow their advice and work together to achieve the best possible outcome.
Address License Suspension
A DUI charge often results in a driver’s license suspension. Your attorney can guide you on how to address this issue, which may involve attending a license reinstatement hearing or enrolling in a DUI education program.
Reflect and Learn
While facing a DUI charge is undoubtedly challenging, it can also be an opportunity for personal growth. Take this time to reflect on your actions and make positive changes in your life. Consider participating in educational programs or support groups that focus on responsible drinking and decision-making.
Move Forward Responsibly
Once your legal matters are resolved, it’s important to move forward responsibly and make safer choices. If you find yourself in social situations involving alcohol, plan ahead for a designated driver, use ride-sharing services, or rely on public transportation. This will keep you and others safe, and save you from the time, money, and stress that comes along with a DUI charge.
Conclusion
Facing a DUI charge as a college student in Statesboro can be daunting, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. By seeking support, educating yourself about the legal process, and working closely with a Statesboro DUI attorney, you can navigate through this challenging time and emerge with valuable lessons for the future. Will I lose my license for a DUI Charge?
In Georgia, if you’re charged with DUI, there is an administrative suspension that can take place and a state court suspension that can take place. There are certain deadlines that you need to meet to appeal the administrative suspension. You can avoid the suspension of your license in certain circumstances, as long as the objections are filed timely. It’s very important that you get to an attorney immediately upon receiving a DUI charge in Georgia.
Being charged for underage DUI
In Georgia, if you are under 21 and charged with DUI, the suspension of your license is automatic. If you’re 21 or over, you have an opportunity to get a work permit or a school permit to drive. However, if you are under 21, you will not have that opportunity, and you will have a hard suspension of your license. Every DUI case, however, is different. Every DUI case is unique.
Duration of a DUI on your record in Georgia
The criminal history of an individual is very important. It can affect employment and more. We get calls often asking how long a DUI will stay on your criminal record.
The answer is, it will stay on your criminal record indefinitely. There used to be some talk about a seven-year term – that’s not true. I have reviewed criminal histories in my practice that go back to the 1970s, and those DUIs are still on the record.
We can help you in your particular case. There may be some things that we can do about restricting and sealing your record, but every case is different.
First-time DUI in Georgia
The penalties for a first-time DUI offense in Georgia are 12 months either probated or in jail, and up to a thousand dollar fine. You will be required to work 40 hours of community service. In addition, you will need to take a DUI class – it’s called DUI School – which is serviced by different organizations in our community. Normally, the 12 months is probated on a first-time DUI, and probation basically means that you report to an office on a monthly basis. You will also be required to pay a monthly probation fee during the time that you are being supervised by an officer.
